Surkhan State Reserve – Natural Treasure of Surkhandarya

The Surkhan State Reserve is one of Uzbekistan’s most important protected areas, established in 1986 to preserve the unique biodiversity of the Kuhitang Mountains. Located in the Sherobod District of Surkhandarya, the reserve borders Turkmenistan and covers a vast area of 23,802 hectares, including more than 15,400 hectares of forest.

Flora & Fauna

The reserve is home to a rich variety of wildlife:

  • 26 species of mammals

  • 136 species of birds

  • 23 species of reptiles

  • 2 species of amphibians

  • 4 species of fish

  • In total, 191 species of fauna have been recorded.

Among them, 18 species are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, making the reserve a vital sanctuary for endangered animals and plants.
