Geography & Climate
Located in the Surkhan‑Sherobod Valley, bordering Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kashkadarya.
Area: 20 100 sq. km with a population of over 3 million people.
Landscapes include plains, the Gissar range, Baisuntau, Kugitantau, and Babatag mountains, plus the Amudarya River valley.
Climate: subcontinental, with warm winters and hot summers reaching +45–50°C.
Administrative & Economic Center
The province has 14 districts and 8 towns. Including Termez, Sherobod, Denau, Boysun, and Jarkurgan.
Termez city is the political, financial, and commercial hub.
Industry: oil, gas, coal (two of Uzbekistan’s largest deposits), gypsum, granite, and argillite.
Traditional industries: cotton cleaning, silk weaving, and textile production.
Historical Significance
Surkhandarya is part of ancient Bactria, with a history of more than 3,700 years.
Mentioned in the Avesto as a land of “thousands of towns and villages.”
Archaeological finds from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages show early agriculture, weaving, and trade.
Sites include Teshiktosh cave, Kuchuktepe, and Kizilcha settlements.
Coins from Greco‑Bactrian rulers like Diodotus, Demetrius, and Eucratides prove ancient trade links.
Rich in monuments from Greco‑Bactrian, Kushan, and Islamic periods, many still awaiting research.
