Surkhan State Reserve was established in 1986 as a first-class protected natural reserve. This state reserve is located on the eastern slopes of Kuhitang Mountains, Sherobod District of Surkhandarya region. The western border corresponds to the state border of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The total area of the main territory of the State Reserve is 23,802 ha, of which 15,418.9 ha are covered with forest.

So far, 26 species of mammals, 136 species of birds, 23 species of reptiles, 2 species of aquatic and terrestrial species, 4 species of fish, a total of 191 species of fauna are found in reserve. Representatives of 18 species of animals are included in the Red Book of the Republic of Uzbekist.
