Sufi Allayar (1644–1724) was a prominent Sufi scholar, mystical poet, and spiritual leader whose life and works continue to inspire generations. Born in Minglar village, Kattakhurghan (Samarkand), he later settled in Vakhshivor village, Surkhandarya region, where he dedicated his life to spreading Islamic enlightenment and the ideals of human perfection.

Educated by the Juybor Sheikhs in Bukhara, where he mastered Persian and Arabic.
Appointed as chief in the Customs’ Court by Bukhara Khan Abdulazizkhan, but later resigned to pursue spiritual work.

Surkhan State Reserve – Natural Treasure of Surkhandarya

The Surkhan State Reserve is one of Uzbekistan’s most important protected areas, established in 1986 to preserve the unique biodiversity of the Kuhitang Mountains. Located in the Sherobod District of Surkhandarya, the reserve borders Turkmenistan and covers a vast area of 23,802 hectares, including more than 15,400 hectares of forest.

Flora & Fauna

The reserve is home to a rich variety of wildlife:

26 species of mammals
136 species of birds
23 species of reptiles
2 species of amphibians
4 species of fish
In total, 191 species of fauna have been recorded.

Hoja Alouddin Attor – Sufi Scholar and Spiritual Leader

Hoja Alouddin Attor (Alauddin Muhammad bin Muhammad al‑Bukhari al‑Attar) was a renowned Islamic religious leader and Sufi master of the Hajagan‑Naqshbandi tariqa. He is remembered as the seventeenth link in the Golden Chain of succession of Naqshbandi sheikhs and the direct successor of Bahauddin Naqshband.

Life & Legacy

Born into a family of perfumers, hence the name Attor.
Studied the external sciences before dedicating himself to spiritual education under Hoja Naqshband.
Founded a large Sufi school in Chaghaniyan, spreading the teachings of mysticism and inner purification.
Passed away on the 20th of Rajab, 802 AH (1400 CE).
Buried on the outskirts of Denau city, where a mosque was later built near his tomb during Uzbekistan’s independence.

Revered as a murid and successor to Bahauddin Naqshband.

Teshiktash Cave – Neanderthal Settlement in Surkhandarya

The Teshiktash Cave is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Central Asia, located in Upper Machay village, Boysun District, Surkhandarya Province. This grotto is recognized as the most ancient Neanderthal settlement in the region, dating back to 100,000–40,000 BC.

Discovery & Research

First studied in 1938 by Professor A.P. Okladnikov.
The cave has an oval niche, with an entrance height of 7 meters, width of 20 meters, and depth of 21 meters.
Excavations revealed five cultural layers, separated by sterile deposits.
The upper layer contained Mousterian tools such as disk‑shaped cores, plates, pointed weapons, and scrapers.
A Neanderthal boy’s skeleton was found here, providing decisive evidence of early human presence in Central Asia.

The Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevski in Termez, Uzbekistan, is a remarkable monument of Russian military architecture in Central Asia. Built in the early 20th century, it reflects the cultural and religious history of the region.

Historical Background

Constructed in 1901 following the standard design of military churches by architects Fyodor Verzhbitsky and Fyodor Smirnov.
Originally built for the 1st Turkestan Rifle Brigade, using baked bricks and plaster.

The Tallitaghora archaeological monument is one of the most fascinating sites in Surkhandarya, Uzbekistan. Its name comes from the Arabic word “tal” meaning “hill,” and refers to a hill shaped like a basin. Located on both sides of the Surkhan River (ancient Chaghonrud‑Chaghanian), Tallitaghora stands out for its strength and majestic architecture compared to other monuments in the region.

Historical Background

The earliest settlement at Tallitaghora dates back to the VI–V centuries BC, proving that communities existed not only in Old Termez but also in its surroundings more than 2,500 years ago.
During the Greco‑Bactrian Kingdom (III–II centuries BC), Tallitaghora functioned as a main temple of water, highlighting its religious and cultural importance.

The Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan, with its center in Termez, has long been a vital hub on the Great Silk Road. From the Greco‑Bactrian period to the Kushan Empire and beyond, Termez played a central role in connecting India, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean world.

Historical Background

In the II century BC, King Demetrius of Bactria expanded his kingdom to Gandhara and Sogdiana, making Termez the most important crossing on the Oxus (Amudarya River).
Subsequent rulers, including Agathocles, Euphratides, and Heliocles, continued to strengthen Termez as a trade hub.
The Yuezhi‑Tokharians, founders of the Kushan Empire, recognized Termez’s strategic value, controlling routes from India through the Oxus valley to Margiana, Parthia, and the Black Sea.
